Ver Valley Walk 1

The Source Walk - MARKYATE AND KENSWORTH

Walk to the north end of High Street. (To see the River Ver exiting Markyate Cell, detour right, under the bypass). Turn left after the War Memorial, up the track to the small village cemetery. There, turn right, left, then right again onto the footpath towards Kensworth. Take in the view to Markyate Cell and the views of the Lynch and source area on this stretch.

The Winterbourne Walk - REDBOURN, NORTH

Starting at the Cricket Clubhouse either take the one mile easy access circular path around Redbourn Common or for the longer circular walk, cross the Common over Hemel Hempstead Road and Chequer Lane to the footbridge and ‘the Moor’ 1 to see the River Red.

The Redbournbury Walk - REDBOURN, SOUTH

From the Cricket Clubhouse on Redbourn Common cross Hemel Hempstead Road and Chequer Lane to follow the grassy path down the slope past the old school, to the footbridge over the River Red and The Moor.

The Three Burys Walk - CHILDWICKBURY, REDBOURNBURY AND GORHAMBURY

From the start walk down St Michael’s Street to the river with its ancient ford, and bridge and Kingsbury Mill beyond. Note the large piece of Puddingstone on the Mill verge.

The Two Cities Walk - ST ALBANS AND VERULAMIUM

From the start at Verulamium Museum, walk past St Michael’s Church into St Michael’s Street with the River Ver and its ancient ford, the 1765 bridge and Kingsbury Mill. Turn right into Verulamium Park; follow the path between the lakes and Abbey millstream.

The Watermeadow Walk - ST ALBANS AND PARK STREET

From the Clock Tower 1 turn left into High Street, then cross towards the Peahen Public House, and turn right down Holywell Hill. Our route takes us past the historic White Hart Hotel and the former Ryder Seed Hall and offices. Cross the River Ver at the base of the hill, then take the riverside footpath left.

The Confluence Walk - PARK STREET AND BRICKET WOOD

At Moor Mill follow the footpath behind to pass under the M25. At the corner of the yard by Moor Mill Lane turn left, to follow the clear path through the former sand and gravel washing plant area to Hyde Lane, turn left.

River Ver Trail - Linear Walk

The River Ver has been owing through its valley in Hertfordshire for hundreds of thousands of years since the last Ice Age. The Ver Valley Society (VVS) and Countryside Management Services have devised a series of eight circular Ver Valley Walks and a linear River Ver Trail to enable the public to appreciate this fascinating landscape.
